UV mapping issue

Hi there, I’m trying to learn Blender’s UV tools and having a lot of issues but I’m going to try and tackle these one at a time. First off is when I mark my seems and and do the initial UV unwrap it unwraps into its different islands as expect but then every face is sperate in the UV window. I tried selecting and merging verts but that doesn’t do anything. Is this the normal behavior of Blender’s UVs? I don’t think it is because when I tested out the default Blender cube all the verts are welded in the UV window. How can I unwrap and keep UV verts welded?

If you unwrap into islands but use Face Selection mode, you can pull faces out of the islands. To avoid this behavior, use Island Selection in the UV Editor
