i just finished rewriting the wiki User Manual that deals with Painting http://mediawiki.blender.org/index.php/Manual/Painting through Unwrapping UVs http://mediawiki.blender.org/index.php/Manual/Unwrapping_a_Mesh.

Nice work, man! This is an area that I think alot of beginners have trouble with, I know I did. This is a very good area to devote your time to, and it is much appreciated. I am still a little foggy in the Similar To Active area. I cant find any of those choices you mention?
The rewrite does have some good quality to it. Though you may want to get the Suzzane images up in the painting section.
