UV mapping static particles?

I’m just wondering if it’s possible for particles to inherit their color from the UV-mapped texture of their emitter.

I’m trying to create the multicolored feather-coat of a penguin with static particles in 2.40RC1 and can’t find a way of mapping texture color to static particles the same way I can map to a mesh. I feel like I’m either overlooking something very simple, or there’s no support for this kind of thing.
