alright ive tried to find this out from the tutoprials on blender.org…however it says u need photoshop or some other photo editing program, which i dont have…is their anyway i can still do uv mapping? if anyone can help i would really appreciate it
Sure you can you just need to get your hands on GIMP Here’s the linkhttp://www.gimp.org/ Just make sure you install the GTK enviorment and the GIMP for the correct OS, good luck UV mapping!
What I cant understand is,
Say I have a cube. And I want it to be a cartoony head. So the face on one face of the cube, the sides, the back etc. how do I unwrap all of it?
So that I can have everything line up perfectly?

You do a tutorial on UVMapping so that you understand how to unwrap the UV Faces. Then you click on UV’s in the header of the UV Editor and you select the script at the top of the menu “Save UV Face Layout”. This will drop a .tga Image of your unwrapped UV Layout into the folder you specified in the script. You can now load that into your paint program and paint your textures onto it then reload it as the Image to use in the UV Editor.
