UV multiple images for one mesh

I have attached two pictures, one render and the other a progress shot. I want to export my UV layout for just the selected head (don’t mind the strange hair texture in the UV layout screen), however when I export and open in Photoshop Blender has exported the whole body, even though I had selected the head only. I want to keep the head and body attached as one mesh, so is it possible in Blender to accomplish this?

I need to know how to do this…I know someone knows the answer out there…?

maybe separate in edit mode with p, and do the uv unwrapping and then joing again.
