UVW Unwrap Errors Fixed After Export

I’ve been noticing a weird problem while unwrapping a few different objects. After I set seams (if applicable) and unwrap, it’ll give me some total random monstrosity of an unwrap, nothing that would be expected. One of the reasons I figured out it was happening was I had a portion unwrapped, decided I wanted to change something on the mesh, then unwrapped it again with the same seams and the resulting unwrap had way off proportions (a section of the mesh that wasn’t touched since the last unwrap). I ended up fixing it by exporting the mesh, then re-importing it and unwrapping it and it works as expected (file format doesn’t matter, both obj and fbx worked).

I happened to have this happen on a very simple cap mesh that works good as an example to show. In the blend the ‘cap’ object is the one that doesn’t unwrap correctly, the ‘cap_exported_imported’ is a duplicate of the object, which was exported as an obj then imported and unwraps as expected.

The first time this happened I was thinking there was some weird setting somewhere I messed up, but since this has happened on different objects I’m not sure what’s going on. Using the same settings while unwrapping both (method, margin etc).

Edit: I forgot to say I’ve tried resetting the UV’s, and unwrapping again but that gave the same result.

Yeah, I’ve checked your file. The original cap has pins set in the image editor to the UV map, select everything in the image editor and press alt+P to unpin them. Then off-course proceed out with UV unwrapping your original bottle cap.

Awesome, thank you!
