Vanilla Walk Cycle - Animation Mentor

Hello!

I’m in week 3 of class 2 with Animation Mentor, and currently I’m finessing the vanilla walk cycle. I’ve had it critiqued multiple times by various people and mentors, so the cycle you see here is the result of countless hours of finessing the controls. I’m excited about how it’s turning out, since this is only my second walk cycle ever. That being said, there are always ways to improve!

My mentor told me to reduce the floppiness of the hands a bit, so I did that, though it may need a bit more reduction; I’m not sure.

I would love any critiques you have for this!

Thanks!

(And yes, while this was animated in Maya, I’m an avid Blender user  )

Overall, it’s a very nice natural walk. If I were to dig around for criticism, the thing that stands out to me in the 3/4 view is the movement in the shoulders. You have a lot of swing there that isn’t filtering down to the upper torso the way I would expect it to. I don’t know whether that means you need less shoulder rotation or more upper torso rotation (or a bit of both).

Thank you! Ah, I see what you’re saying. I’ll play around with the chest and shoulder controls. It may be that I pushed the shoulders too far on their own.
