Velvet rope node set up

Hi, I’m modeling one of those red velvet rope things they use at special events ect. Can anyone suggest (and maybe post a node screengrab) of a nice cycles node set up for the red velvet?

Like the referece pic below

Here is a quick test. If the rope is smaller or further away you can probably just use just a velvet BSDF, but if you want to break up the smoothness you will need to mix with something. I mixed a glossy using a voronoi procedural but you might find it easier to use a file texture for more control and to be able to see it in the uv editor to get the scale right. Same material is on the rope and carpet.

sorry if pattern is needed here it could be anyting you want
depends also on the rope type!
there is a tut on rope outthere and file availabel at blenswap

now i was more talking about rope with very short hair which i think can be siumualted iwth a simple velvet + displacement

but if a very close shot is needed then i guess adding short hair with particules system would also do a nicer job but it is more difficult to do!

@jandress , @ rickyblender Thank you both for you suggestions. It definitely needs something more than just the velvet.

@ace dragon - Luckily this particular object (velvet rope) is more of just a prop for a project, and I am already fighting memory issues with it. So any kind of strand rendering would be out of the question, but I agree, if you wanted to do it the right way, that would probably be the way to go.

If you go here and go to post #152 You can see how they will be used as props. The first image is close up still render just using the velvet shader alone ( no bump or anything) . The second image is more realistic as to how it will be viewed in the final animation.

Thanks again to all of you for your suggestions.

for rope making
you can make a twisted rope with UV like this
