venomgfx question

This may not be the best method, but it’s an easy one :

  • Add a Cube and go to Edit Mode

  • Select all and press W -> Subdivide Smooth , then press SHIFT + ALT + S and type 1 (or Mesh -> Transform -> ToSphere and type 1)
or just add a Subdivision Surface modifier and press APPLY before entering Edit Mode, result :

  • Press the key I of your keyboard 2 times to use the Inset Individual faces function and move the mouse a bit to obtain :

  • Be in Face Selection mode (the button on bottom or press CTRL + TAB -> Face) and press CTRL + I to invert the selection

  • Press W -> Subdivide and use the Loop Tools button “Circle” (make sure you enable Loop Tool in File -> User Prefs -> Addon , mesh category) to obtain :

  • Change the pivot point to “Individual Origin” (default is Median Point)

  • press S and scale down a bit the various circles roughly like this

  • Press CTRL+S -> Cursor to Center to move the cursor to the center (or press CTRL+S -> Cursor to Selected that will move the cursor to the center of the selected circles in case your original cube wasn’t at the center of the 3D space)
Change now the Pivot to 3D Cursor

  • Add a Subdivision Surface Modifer and set it to level 3 and enable the “Adjust Edit Cage to Modifier Result” button
Add a Smooth modifier, set Factor to 1 and Repeat to 3, enable both the “Display Modifier in Edit Mode” and “Adjust Edit Cage to Modifier Result” button

  • Back in 3D View, press E to extrude then press S and move the mouse to obtain something roughly like that :

  • Change Pivot back to Median Point

  • Press W -> Smooth 4 or 5 times to obtain more rounded result

In object mode, smooth shading instead of flat shading and the help of a matcap

You can now apply the Subdivision Surface modifier, then the Smooth modifier if you don’t need them and obtain the real geometry if you want to export this.
