Vertex Color Paint gives different results from Object Color

In the attached .blend, I have a sphere with some toon shading. The one on the left has each vertex color set to red, and “Vertex Color Paint” active in its material settings. The one on the right has its object color set to red, and “Object Color” active in its material settings. The rest of the material settings is identical.

I was expecting the object color mode to give the same result as the vertex color paint mode. What am I missing here?
