I’m haveing trouble with vertex grouping in blender. i’m trying to set on vertex group to a different weight then another, but when i make another group and edit the weight of that it edits the other one too! What is going on here? This also happens with making multipule matterials and whenever i duplicate an object. huh? 
If you look at them in WeightPaint mode (Ctrl-Tab) they will display the weights you assigned to them in the VG panel.
Can’t answer your Materials problem without seeing it or more info.
