Vertex Weighting Script

Hi dont know if this has been asked before but I desperatley need a script that gives a better way to weight vertices to bones rather than the vertex groups and weight painting, something like how 3ds Max does it is ideally what i am looking for I dont know if this is possible or if this has been done but it would speed up my skining time considerably.

One fairly good looking way to autoskin right now is actually hardcoded in Blender if you have a new SVN build, no python needed.
