Vertice inbetween 2 others

Hi guys, how do you select 2 vertices and an edge, and put a vertice inbetween both along the edge? I’m sure this can be done.

With your edge selected, press W -> Subdivide or CTRL+E -> Subdivide or click on the Subdivide button or click on Mesh > -Edge -> Subdivide

thanks! I was thinking ctrl+r but I guess not.

Actually, loop cut and slide cuts edge rings but you don’t see the cut line until there is a (quad) face. It still cuts the first edge even if it’s the only one, so you can subdivide an edge with it but you just don’t get visual feedback.
