Very slow menus

When i open a blender menu i can follow the menuitems as they are drawn one by one down the menu. This is very annoying and shouldnt need to happen on a fast computer using a graphics accelerator card fresh from the shelf.

I use Linux and nVidia GeForce 5200 with all the latest drivers and libraries. I tried using the dynamically linked as well as the statically linked binaries. no difference. I am so close to give up blender just because of the poor performance, but before i do i thought i might post a desperate post just in case someone can help me with suggestions.

Thanks // Wilm – a sad blender user

Yes i saw this problem on an ati rage pro 128, check out this:

  1. try a different version of blender, maybe 2.3 is bugus on that(hope it will be fixed in 2.31).
  2. if not, take a look on the following links
    http://www.opengl.org
    http://www.blender3d.org/Support/?sub=GraphicsCards

if not, well… i’m sorry i don’t know this problem much, though i heared alot of pp having the same prob.
Generaly they are saying that the blender gui is 2d but it is draw by opengl who don’t realy like it, if I remember right, the version 1.1 of opengl is the problem.

anyway, gather the web, I’m sure there is information on such prob.

either the nvidia drivers don’t support the fx yet (or the ones you have) or they are not installed correctly. My Geforce 2 MX had no such problems.

(check you x log (/var/log/Xf86.0.log probably) and tell us if blender prints everything. )

and see if it is running in mesa, I posed how to find out in https://blenderartists.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13722

I have a GF FX 5200 and Linux on my laptop and it works perfectly.
I use the latest (4496) nVidia driver and a dynamic build of Blender.

Please post the output of glxinfo - it will tell you what GL drivers are running.

I dont know what to look for…

When i use the script in the above post i get:

Using a clean Global Dictionary.
GL Vendor NVIDIA Corporation
GL Renderer GeForce FX 5200/AGP/SSE/3DNOW!
GL Version 1.4.0 NVIDIA 44.96

which looks ok.

I have noticed that its not just the menus that are slow. Every aspect of the graphical interface is slow. Not sure if the rendering part is slow too since i dont know what to compare with, but the interface sure is slow and consumes lots of processor power. [/quote]

The output of that script looks correct.

You should try comparing your XF86Config to mine: mysite.reblended.com/alien-xmp/XF86Config
