I was wondering if anyone can help me with finding a good software capable of merging a video file and it’s corresponding subtitles?
I’ve googled it… but it’s hell out there… so I will give it a shot here, anyone has any suggestions?

If i think you mean you want the subtitles emdeded in the video frames then theres two ways of doing it that i know of:
One: Download the VobSub package which includes Submux. Follow their instructions with submux…it should be pretty easy.
Two: Get VirtualDub and get the subtitle plugin (search it). Open up virtualdub and go to the video filters and add subtitler (if your subs are in srt or sub format you will need to convert them to ssa through subresync included in Vobsub). Then reselect a codec of ypur choice in the compression settings in video then save it. But this is whats known as a destructive method (video quality degrades somewhat depending on codec and settings and original video quality). Im not sure whether method one is non-destructive or destructive.

I’ve downloaded the both, and I’m very happy with the combination of both applications, and yes, I know about destructive methods, I’m just experimenting with the apps, I’ll always try to get the highest quality source.
One question though:
VirtualDub can’t compress as DivX, xviD, or any format other than AVI. A workaround I guess would be to save a noncompressed avi and then to compress it with the mplayer enconder… is it there another way?
Yes, it can compress to any codec at your disposal(whatever codec is installed on your computer, basically). You have to go to Video >> Compression (alternatively, just press CTRL + P). The extension still stays avi but it is compressed in the chosen codec.

Since you guys are on the subject… what codec could I use that would output a video file equal to what I see on my computer screen. Basically no compression, or looks like no compression. I’m not to worried about file size because it will end up on a VCD or DVD, not on the internet.

Well, really either no codec, and just leave it as uncompressed avi, or, if it’s gonna me on a DVD, then MPEG-2 encoding.
Where are you located? If you’re outputting to DVD with the intent to play it on a television, the resolution you want is likely to be either 720x480 @ 29.97fps (NTSC) or 720x576 @ 25fps (PAL). VCD, I believe, is half that resolution. The compression doesn’t really play a big factor. Although, ultimately, if you’re going to DVD or VCD, you’re likely to be using some form of mpeg (most likely mpeg-2). If it’s going to tape, mpeg-2 (or anything your tape-dump tool or video editor can play for that matter) should work fine, but I usually use DV compression (wrapped in a mov or avi, depending on my mood :)).
Fweeb beat me to it. When i work with video, i usually save to a DV file, then coonvert to mpeg2. Neither of which VirtualDub is capable of (i think. I may be wrong. Heres hoping). If I had the hard disk size (somewhere around 160 to 200 gb…for one movie length) I would use no-compression. But Its ungodly huge.
I am trying to use CamStudio. I have several codecs I have tried that either look bad, slow down the capture process so much it makes blender hard to use, or can’t be converted by my DVD software (Pinnacle 8). Anyone have any suggestions?
