Viewing Potential Edges on a Curve Path

Hello, first post.

I have been trying to view the potential edges along a simple curve path. In edit mode all I see are the vertices and the line, whereas all the instructors I follow have the potential edges displayed also while they are working. I can’t find the setting to toggle this on. This would help see how complex any potential shape is while I am in edit mode and working on it before it is made into a mesh.

Here is an example from an unrelated image:

Do you see how he has the potential edges there along the black line. I only see a smooth line when I use the path tool and am wondering how to turn this on/off.
