visibility of background vertices & edges?

Is there a way to reduce the visibility of the background vertices & edges in edit mode?

I’m learning to model, & I keep grabbing the wrong ones. For instance: I’ll be working on my model’s face, & instead of grabbing a piece of his cheek, I accidentally reach through & grab a piece of his teeth because the vertices are about the same color.

There’s always H to hide them.

I can’t believe I didn’t mention that. xD Yeah, hiding geometry is also paramount to getting work done.
