Hi,
I do not know what it is, that makes me feel like this, but it seems Vista can’t deal with Blender. If I open any blend file, other than the default scene which I start with, and either change the frame, press alt+something… Blender freezes. And after you have frozen it once, it remembers, like a well trained elephant, to freeze again even with the default scene. What the peep is wrong (except the fact that I am even using Vista)? It’s like ice skating wearing pants filled nitrocglycerine. Bad, AAAAAALWAYS bad.
I am using an MSI L745 laptop with Vista Home Premium screw-up edition.
Core2duo T5700 2x 1.83 gHz
2gb ddr2 667mhz ram
Nvidia 7600Go 256mb
Microsoft sucks, but they make good keyboards. Those ergonomic ones are good for you when you ram your head against the desk. Well, Windows 2000 has served me with great stability and without problems. Unlike Vista. I pity the fool :ba:!
I assume you is talking about graphics drivers. What kinda driver issue would drive a computer into a tempest of turmoil such as this? I beg your pardon, but I shall install latest drivers and hope to conquer the problem and overcome the plight in midst of which I must wander. Besides we have had this conversation already, you know I know.
Your reply bears no significance in the matter of solving the actual problem. Unfortunately, this is my dad’s work laptop so I don’t want to install any other OS, because my father needs Windows applications… and it isn’t really solving the actual problem.
Anyway your information i svery useful because I was thinking of new PC when Intel reduces prices at the end of this month. It is quite impossible to buy new PC without Vista so your post makes me think twice.
Are there any other users that have problems with Blender on Vista?
Like jesterKing suspected it was a driver issue, indeed. I just installed the latest forceware from nvidia.com Thank you for the tip, my fellow countryman. I didn’t think it could cause such catastrophes but I guess anything is possible with Vista. I wasn’t so sure to hassle with the drivers, since it is a laptop and my perception has been that they’re more picky about the drivers than desktops.
A bit of Googling led me to this page - You’re not alone in your Blender-Vista problems:(
Someone got it to work though:
I got it to work on Vista!!! Its simple, down load the full version (the transportable one, not the install file) then extract the files and run it from there, don’t put it into your program files though… other than that it works just fine!!!
You could try uninstalling Blender then doing that:yes:
I don’t know if putting it in Program Files would be the problem though…
Vista is worse than ME. Now that’s saying something. Personally, I’d rather set myself on fire and cut my arms off with a chainsaw while watching Seinfeld than even think about running Vista.
And I guess without the remote I can’t throw it at the TV to destroy the glass at the front to stop the playing of Seinfeld. Yes I would gladly sacrifice the life of a TV just to kill Seinfeld. It was just as bad as Myst 3.
Well- I got Vista and Blender 2.44 (32 bit) works on it much smoother then Blender 2.44 64 bit version on Mandriva (64 bit) without any tricks or prayers to great mzimu of computer geeks so I suspect it is not just an OS (mentioned in other thread). Actually it was a huge supprise to me- something I’d never in my life expect to be possible (as any person working in industry I am not a great admirer of M$). I know it’s quite trendy to blame Vista, especially on net forums, but from my personal experience I can’t say anything bad about it up to now, after two months of rather tough work in games dev. I’ve been using various 3d apps, from Max, Maya AND Blender, through level editing software up to engines at least 8 hrs/day, 6 days a week and only crash I suffered was caused by hardware problem- namely overheat caused by fan failure. Maybe I am just lucky…
Its not luck, RK, you’ve probably got a system similar to whatever Microsoft’s using at Redmond to do the development work. I’m still running Windows XP on my desktop, but my new laptop is happily converted to Linux (finally found a distribution that runs all the applications I use on a daily basis.) Microsoft will eventually work out the kinks in their initial buggy device driver release (normal for Microsoft) but their locking Vista into Digital Restrictions Machinery puts Vista beyond the pale for me. Hopefully by the time I need to replace my XP box I’ll be familiar enough with Linux to go completely open source.
Windows XP = good
Windows Vista = Bad
Why?
Because I can’t do anything without these frustrating messages popping up.
Age of Empires 3 is trying to run autorun.exe
Cancel or allow?
Yes you stupid OS, I’m aware it’s trying to run, that’s why I put it in the disk tray in the first place. Vista is like a blowfly that keeps buzzing around your head. So it has some nifty eyecandy, the candy itself tastes gross.
You might be true. To be honest- if I would not have to use Windows programs (most game engines and SDK tools my customers work with) I’d happily move to Linux 100%- I do not like spending money on something I can get for free as much as anybody else. Unfortunately I do not have much choice and I suspect same is true for quite big part of games dev industry as most of customers are Windows users.
i havent had any probs with vista+blender either. although all i have ever DLed was the zip version of blender and just ran that. so maybe i would have probs if i actually DLed the install version. but i dont think i am going to try, it would be kinda dumb to DL blender that might not work
