Apparently I’ve also heard that a similar event many decades back led to the creation of a mountain that is over 1000 ft. high, I wonder if the Italian government will have to move the entire airport and everything around it as it grows.
Right now the mound of mud is just a few inches high, I wonder how long this will go and how it will get.
Wow that brings back memories. Not the mound but the gas. I lived near Naples for awhile in the crater of a small ancient volcano. Vents all around the ridge spewing that stinkin’ sulfur gas ruined more than a few morning jogs. Gag!

I’ve been to Yellowstone National Park on a family vacation and I absolutely did not mind the sulfur smell (nice and earthy), my family thought it stunk though, so maybe I’m in a small minority here.
Of course this one just popped up in a seemingly random location and no one would really know where the next one could come about (hoping it’s not under a house).

The mountain you might be thinking of is Paricutin, which began building in 1943 and went dormant nine years later, after building a 400+ meter cindercone. It is in central Mexico.
This looks like a fumarole rather than a new volcano. The stuff coming out is mainly mud and gas rather than cinders. Probably won’t get too big, since it isn’t bringing up lava, just really really hot water.
