I’m working on a voyager space probe for an animation. Even though it need not be an exact replica, because the animation has no scientific background whatsoever, it should resemble the original, of course.
Here you see my work so far plus a pic from the internet, which is my basis. The actual instruments are wrapped in some sort of protective cloth, which I cannot seem to imitate. I was thinking about the shrinkwrap modifier, but whenever I use it, my results look shabby. What’s more, it needs way too many vertices and thus the model needs much longer render times, which I cannot tolerate, as I need to render a couple of minutes.
My question to you would be
do you have a better idea to create the wrapping?
what do you think of the model so far?
my materials are usually crappy, what tips could you give me here on what I have so far.

For the cloth wrapping, perhaps you can uses a cloth simulation or a normal map made from the orginal.
I’ve had luck with making a rough model and letting a cloth drape around it. Good luck with the model.
Elaborate on wrapping. A trick I use very often when I need things placed on top of or on the surface of, I just copy the verticies of that object, press p seperate by selected, then join these verts the object that you need moved, now you can merge your verts where they need to be.
But please elaborate on your wrapping and I’ll try to figure out some different approaches.
+1 on elaboration. You could mean the foil sun sheilding they put around these vehicles, or you could be talking about UV Mapping.
On textures, what you have looks good so far. To be honest, it dosen’t need a great texture artist to get that right. The most difficult one is going to be the reflector in the instrument bay.
