VSE preview window white.

This happened when I went to see my dad about rotating a video 90 degrees. I thought I would use Blender VSE with transform effect. But in his computer, the video preview window came out looking white instead of showing what the video looks like. I imagine this is hardware related because it works fine in my own machine but can someone explain what is happening, and whether there is a setting which might get preview to work in VSE for dad’s machine?

This happens in both Blender 2.49b and 2.55

Well, this is a typical error on older hardware with 2.5x versions. I think it is very unlikely to happen with 2.4x.
If you load an image or movie strip the preview is white. Most of my students running blender on older (windoze) systems usually experience this problem.
You could solve this by (a) installing the latest hardware graphics card drivers (if any) and (b) trying other builds/versions of Blender. Having tried both 2.49b and 2.55 you could try 2.48 or ealier versions, maybe that will help.
Finally, make sure that the system is up to date with codecs-wise. It’s probably irrelevant but you never know esp on windoze.

The same issue is being discussed in another thread, unfortunately without much resolution yet.
