Wanted: Low - poly trees

Does anybody know of a resource of free low-poly trees? (As in uvmapped textured trees. I’ve tried polygonal trees and that took too much of a hit on framerate.)

Model the trunk. Use alpha-mapped planes for the leaves. Keep the trunk low-poly, and you don’t need that many alpha planes to get a good effect. Use clip-alpha on those to avoid the sorting issue.

yoFrankie has low poly trees that look nice in GLSL and OK in texface.

Hay man check this out. this might help you…

Sorry, but those are the polygonal trees I mentioned that take up too much framerate. I’m looking for something less than 30 polys, not 200+.

30 Poly’s?
You can barely get a four-branched tree at 30 polys.

What kind of game are you making?

I was thinking of something like in FSX, four or five alphamapped planes with tree textures. I’m gonna want a lot of trees, but they’re not going to really be seen up close.

Even a nice transparent tree texture would be a big help.

check out the terra sierrum blog, the guys shared some alpha maps

i have the exact same problem as you do, i need low poly trees, but the yare very hard to find these days and the work to create them *****

Check out http://www.cgtextures.com/. Look under nature then trees.

have you thought about rendering the trees from greenhouse from each side and map each render on a plane? that costs you 4 polys for each side plus 2 times 4 for the top and bottom view…
EDIT: like this: http://blender-archi.tuxfamily.org/Textures#Trees

Here’s a few low-poly trees from my game. Get them here: http://rapidshare.com/files/267549908/trees.zip
Includes a pine tree, palm tree, normal tree, and a bush.
(polycount 30 - 50ish)

Sorta off topic, but if the trees aren’t going to be seen up close, couldn’t they just be textured planes that track towards the player…? You know, the old bill boarding technique…

Hey there,

I am working on a large scale terrain. This involves a lot of trees (now about 1000).

I use simple squares with alpha channeld textures and I think it looks realy nice.

I my project I added a script that turns the square perpendicular to the camera every time the camera is moved. So the camera looks always at 90 dergrees on the texture.
I like it as it is now.

If you are interested I wil try to post a .blend. This will also contain a lot of different kinds of textures I got from the internet or made myself. Be warned though, the project is in its first developpement fase.

If you are interested I wil try to post a .blend.

That would be great! Please post the blend!

Okay, here is the .blend file

It will need GLSL-on in the game-options

(warning because of the packed textures it is 9.2 Mb in size.
I don’t know this is a problem for you, I left out most of the trees to reduces filesize)

If you have started the GE, first press the spacebar, this will generate a few forrested arreas (about 640 tree).
Then put you mouse-cursor at the top of the screen this will move the camera forward
(left side screen turn to the left, right side to the right, bottom move backwards).

At first it will seem there are no trees, but when you get near the forrests and stop the
camera moving, trees will appear.
(I did this to reduce the amount of vissible trees in the game and gain some speed)
Rotating the mousewheel will move the camera up and down by the way.

Just try to find your way with the information above. If you like more information just say so (I can imagine the scripts will need some explanation).

The .blend is here:

I hope this is a bit of help for you

Sorry, but my computer doesn’t support GLSL.
Thanks anyway!

you know, you could just use the alpha texture technique, and i edit mode, under texture face tab, activate ‘Billboard’ and the trees will point at the camera without z rot.
note: you might need to rotate the plane a bit in edit mode.

Yes I know there is an option like that (however I never used it before).
But then I do not want the trees to kind of look up to my camera (when it is relatively high above the terrain). They should stay upright.

I just turn the trees facing the projection of the camera on the terrain (eg. the place where the camera would be when it ‘falls down’ and hits ythe floor.

Thanks any way for your reply, it might come in handy in future.

Greetings to you both

JBal

PS. Hey Skykooler I just made a .blend that you can use it is here:
