Warp Drive Effect

(leojS) #1

Does anyone know how it is possible to make a kind of Warp Drive effect (like in Star Trek)? What I want to do is have a space ship flying through a “tunnel” of stars, with the camera following it.

Thanks

You mean like my avatar?

Easy.

  1. Put the ship in the middle (preferably with 0 rotation).
  2. Add a grid, say 50 by 50 verts.
  3. While in edit-mode, select all the grid’s verts and press the “hash” button in the edit-menu.
  4. Go out of edit mode and then add a particle-effect in the object-menu.
  5. Press the “vect” button and turn upp the “norm” to somewhere above 0.1.
  6. Add a material to the grid, make it a halo and push “hard” slider all the way up, play around a little with the halo-size.
  7. Also, you can turn on M-Blur in the render-menu.
  8. Arrange the camera as you like and then you’re done.

A quickly made demonstration.

I did everything you said. nothing happened. The grid wasn’t even rendered! Do I have to set any of the Force values in the particle effects menu?

  1. Go out of edit mode and then add a particle-effect in the object-menu.

I guess you made an error here narnia, check out Object\Effects\NEW Effect.
Then select Particles in the menu in right side of the panel and set up the values as space.warp told.

Another place where you could have gone wrong is Material. Check out Shading\Material\Add new. Then find Shaders (normally middle panel) and click Halo on.

Do I have to set any of the Force values in the particle effects menu?
You don’t have to do anything to those values.

Check out http://blender3d.com/cms/Particle_interaction.349.0.html and http://mediawiki.blender.org/index.php/Manual/PartXIII/Particles for more information about particles.

It is surprising what you’ll find in the documentation!
It may help with the effect
