WC#84 / experimenting with translucency::elements::fire::

Well I’ve been experimenting with translucency and than I thought: “hey that could be nice as an entry in the weekend chalenge”, so here it is:

At first I wanted to make the fire spirals around the candel (that is still a possibilty - If I’ll have time) but lattics are so exhausting to handle.

Hey, very nice!!!

looks like a real candle… 8)

@ner, you are the translucency expert. How come there are no tutorials  ?

I’ve had absolutely NO success getting translucency to look anywhere near this good. I description of how you accomplished that would be great! Nice work!

I affiliate to that request. The wax looks amazing. :o

It’s got to be a fotograph. I’m possible he made something that good! Nice work @ner!

You have to get your light source close to the material, and the texture is important too,…nice job @ner.

very nice

looks like subsurface scattering, @ner. very very good.

how’d you fake SSS with blender?

A ‘blend’ texture applied to the candle mesh which affects the ‘Emit’ of the material? And the buttons that look like:

_ X Y Z
_ X Y Z
_ X Y Z

…in the material settings are probably all set to ‘Z’?

I got a similar result to yours by doing this, I’m just wondering if it’s close.

maybe a post of the blend-file when the contest is over? I’m sure it would answer lots of questions about this subject…

uhm, we have real translucency now. why fake it with emit

just a blend texture that affects translucency.
very convincing

just curious, can we see a wireframe?

Nice candle

Great picture. Found the translucency button today. How does it work? What does it do? This isn’t SSS, is it?

you got that right! it is translucency from the new builds - but one light source wasn’t enough, so I needed to put another lamp inside the candle it’s self to give this apperence.

thank you all. I don’t think I can add a drip of wax because I don’t have enough time and my computer is too weak to handle metaballs so I could do the wax. And as for the spiraling fire - well can anyone tell me how to control lattics eficiantly?
oh, and I can upload the file (I think) but you’ll need one of the latest CVS builds to get the trnaslucency to work.

once agein : thank you all.

Great work, @ner, both the flame and the wax!

a Quick was to move latice is to rig it. Do a 10x2x2 (Tube) and rig it by the simple "from the closess bone.

Excellent render, @ner! I haven’t got a chance yet to play with the new transparency feature, but your render demonstrates its potential very well.

Great job
Can we expect some small tutorial? Just few screenshots with material and lamp settings
