< WC Entry - Samurai Helmet >

The scene I’m working on won’t actually include a Samurai warrior simply because I’m terrible at modeling people at this point and I don’t think I’ll have time to make one look decent enough for my own tastes, so I’m going to go with the helmet you see below and a few other objects which represent the samurai “way”. Please give harsh crits. Not because I’m a sadist but because I’d really like to know what sucks and what doesn’t. Lighting and textures (what there is of them) are temporary at this point, so you can avoid saying anything about that until I ask about it. Thanks! Enjoy!

Could you send me the blend so I can put it on my samurai? :Z

:stuck_out_tongue: No crits from me. I think it looks great, for whatever that’s worth.

For a clear idea of proportions, it might be a good idea to post head-on and full-side views of this helmet. Right now, I don’t think we have enough to say much.

Well the idea is: Does it look like a samurai helmet? If the answer is yes I’m doing something right. I’m not sure if this is the angle I’m going to show it from in the end…but we’ll see. I have to add the mask yet! Or at least try %| Thankyou very much for the responses everyone! And no…you can’t have it for your samurai

In that case… yes. Although I seem to remember the side-flaps being segmented.

Hey when this contest is over let’s get together with the guy who made the sword, and build a samurai. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve been looking at pics on the net and there’s so many different styles you can get away with pretty much anything in regard to details like that. I’m still adding “nurnies” though

Damn, I’m too working on a helmet :D… but yours is like way better.

But atleast I’ve got the side-flaps “right”

I’ve made a lot of alterations and I began the texturing process. I’m pretty happy with it so far. Tell me what you think everyone!

Oh god that’s almost godlike :O… I like… I won’t steel your ideas promise

Besides, I’m zorro :Z, I can figure out my own ideas

Good job with the dragons, but maybe more detail than just a silhouette? From what I can see of the flap texture, I really dig that. The dome looks a little plastic, though. Keep going, man, it’s coming along nicely.

excellent!

Thanks for the comments @ndy, Fweeb and einar

I won’t be adding any more detail to the dragons because they’re supposed to be polished brass plates on leather (sorta). I didn’t think I’d be able to make dragons but I did it! Yay! As for the texture on the flaps being something you like but the dome looking plasticy…well…thats a lighting issue because they’re the same texture  I’ll tweak those more as I go along. Keep the suggestions coming…this project has really been a lot of fun so far!

Just for clarification, when I was talking about the flaps, I was referring to the part that goes around the back of the helmet, not the flaps with the (excellently drawn, btw) dragons on them.

Oh ok! I get it now. Yeah that texture on the back of the neck guard is pretty simple, but its effective. I’m debating adding more detail back there but I’m not sure how I’m going to have the helmet positioned yet so I decide that later.

As for the dragons - I did that with beziers and then extruded it slightly. I had used a deformation lattice to wrap it better to the flap, but the thing is, I didn’t know how to “apply” the change and I deleted the lattice once I had it how I wanted it thinking that would work. Amateur mistake by a lazy guy who wouldn’t read a tut. It still came out ok anyhow. Thanks again!

I like it, maybe a full suit one day. The only thing i can find to Criticise the purple texture on the top does look a little like plastic, or maybe hot glue %| any how it looks quite good. One suggestion I have to make it really cool is this. Add a plume or a coupla feathers outta the top, either that or spike it. but is good the way it is, Good Work!

Zephod, here’s the helmet with fancier “thingies” sticking off. Its not feathers but I may add something like that later. My mask didn’t come out fantastic, but I like the impression that its hiding there. This isn’t the final lighting setup either so it will be more visible. But anyhow…here is update #3. Tell me what you think everyone!

Nice! It really has a regal look to it now. That leather looks great.

I’m a little disappointed I haven’t had more input about this… :frowning:

Does anyone have any suggestions? Anyone at all?
