We should help to blender developer

hello, everyone!
I’m starting this thread to tribute Gensher (Daniel Genrich) our blender developer(smoke, cloth, fluid code maintainer)
According to this: https://twitter.com/romgen/status/223690297832509440
And from my conversation with him through IRC:
he wanted to start code OpenCL/CUDA stuff for Blender: Like SMoke rendering support for Cycles, GPU usage to display Smoke, OpenCL enabled Cloth, etc.
But delivery truck with his new GPU got burned! There will be some compensation, but not enough to buy a new GPU.
He is very distracted now, i think community could help him a bit, only 1 GPU isn’t that many!
Let’s show our big heart and thankfull community, DONATE via this link:

                               http://wxtools.com/

Smoke in cycles rendering through GPU!!! Doesn’t that sounds cool?

Jesus christ, how unlucky.

or the FedEx dude just stole everything in the truck, put it in safety and lit fire to his truck. I don’t thrust them FedEx/UPS anymore.

but yeah we should donate, doing it right now. with some luck we’re many and he can buy double gfx cards from a local computer store and skip the delivery.

FedEx folks don’t earn lots of money, so they need to do things quick

Just donated 10 Euros, hope enough others will do the same!

Even here in Germany i seen a delivery driver forgetting to close back door and driving around next street corner. Luckily it was only about five meters so he would not speed up that much and from small streets and parking on all streetsides it is also not possible. The only issue i once had was an RMA of a harddisk which was not in its package anymore after its return to service center. But after a assuring letter they believed me and later the new HD came in - well broke also after a while so i got one from other make and manufacturer.

Such can happen and due we all do and did benefit from Daniels work, of course we should naturally help him go ahead by giving donations. It must not be much money, the huge count of blender users will sum up easily to buy a new gfx i am sure

Jens

Is that his real website? The only thing on the website is the donate page.

Jup, due it is a bit nasty to donate by logging in to paypal, i encouraged Daniel to
setup a donation site explicitely. Thats all.

Jens

This is strange, shouldn’t he get all the money back if his card was destroyed in delivery?

Hey guys,

Thank you so much for your support!
It’s still not a replacement, but we’re getting there!

Regarding insurance: There are basicly 2 problems here.

a) The insurancy won’t pay because they say “You need to proof that there was actually a working gfx card in there.”.

b) Even if I can convince them to pay with the help of an overpriced lawyer, I still would only get 250€ (special price I payed), which won’t get me a new GTX 580 3GB.

Still you give me hope! I’ve never heard of something similiar. :frowning:

Genscher, what shipping company should habe shipped the card? I can’t believe they just say “Oh sorry. The truck burnd down. You don’t get any replacement.” This is just ridiculous for any company.

@ Fishlike: Actually this is not ridiculous. It’s common practice in Germany. Just google for “transportschaden” and “versicherung”. And you should read carefully. They didn’t say “you don’t get anything”. They are giving me the silent treatment and the only message was that I need to proof the actual value of the package. Otherwise everyone could just come and say the package containted 500€ of value (max. insured value). Basicly it’s a dead end and several other people before me needed to go to court (see “frag-einen-anwalt.de”).

For now the whole case is already at the police. This is not going to end in the next months… :frowning:

I am a bit disappointed that we’re now drifting off-topic here.

@ all supporters: Thank you for your encouragement! :o

@genscher: Have you managed to get enough in donations to be able to buy a new GPU?

@ motorsep: Not yet. :frowning: See http://wxtools.com/ for the current funding.

I hope you can get the card you need, I donated some but not nearly enough.

Thanks Genscher for your work anyway.

we’re halfways there, @AndriusB I can vouch for grenscher it is his site ^^ and he’s the guy behind smokesim.

FYI (GTX 580 3GB starting at 317€)

@ Zalamander: Thanks for the info! I’ve updated the goal accordingly! Only 70€ to go

I have to post a warning here, because since I posted the link it appears the cheap cards sold out from all the “proper” vendors (that I know) and now there are only a few shops left with bad or no ratings. Don’t order from these! These shops will list a huge amount of merchandise as “available” to very low (usually the best) prices. Here’s how they work: They first take your money and then figure out how they can bring you the merchandise. In most cases, they won’t be able to do that and it takes forever to get your money back out.

That sucks. In Sweden it’s usually the seller who is responsible for the package until its delivered to the customer, to bad its not the same in Germany. Maybe the company you bought it from can help you prove the value of the package. In the mean I hope you get enough donations to buy a new one!

+1 for this.
It happened to me before. I had to wait two months before I got what I ordered. Better pay a bit more and buy it from a trustworthy seller.
