Weathering or Beating up a mesh via script?

I would like to take my newly created gear mesh, and beat it up a bit so it’s not so darn perfect and straight-edged. Is there a way to do this through a script or some sort of automated process, or do I need to subdivide and go in by hand and pluck at vertices?

You could subdivide areas and give a little fractal value
Subdivide and use sculpting tools to create dents etc

For some thing like that, use AO map, normal map and UV texture.
