WebP image format from Google

http://code.google.com/intl/de-DE/speed/webp/gallery.html

looks like new image format is coming from google to replace jpg

they claim a file size reduction up to 60% better then jpg

Claas

I hope if they are trowing out yet another file format out, it end up as something useful that can actually replace another older one, if not here we go again adding plugins to our favorite softwares and having compatibility issues, as if we didn’t have enough to cope with =___=.

good will by google!

it’s not the first image format that is superior to JPEG, but they never succeeded.

the next important step would be acceptance by the W3C and all major browser developers. even if they will support it it’s gonna take years until most browser can handle it and world wide image content is replaced WebP.

im carefully optimistic, but imho it’s not gonna happen soon.

we’ll see

other than that, it may be a good alternative to render out stuff (over jpeg).

Things like that need to be adopted (almost) immediately, in order to replace/erase a well common used format… Most of us are quite bound to habits and, even when wishing to have changes, quite slow to jump into (wild) novelty…

Interesting. I wonder if the new format will be better than JPEG at handling high-contrast images like line drawings and textual images.

what about jpeg2000? why did it never catch on? is it patent encumbered?

The WebP pictures look like they are adding saturation. But, that could be the PNG containers used to display them.

from what I read elsewhere, it takes 8x as long to encode as JPEG.
