Weight Painting Problems

I am trying to attatch a mesh to an Armature using weight painting. I have tryed the tutorial in WikiBlender, but I can not make it work. I can get to the stage of actually weight painting the mesh, but as soon as I try to move the armature to see if it is working that is when I run into problems. The mesh will not move, and the weight paining seems to be cleared. All the mesh changes back to blue and I am unable to apply any more weight painting.

What am I doing wronge?

mmm…well, let´s see, first you have the mesh, then you apply the armature modifier, and then you start painting. In order to be able to weight paint, the armature must be in Pose mode.
That should work.

Should I click on apply when making the modifier or leave it open? I have the armature in pose mode, but it still does not work. I can weight paint, at least the mesh turns red, but when I try to move the armature the mesh does not move. The other issue is that once I try moving the armature the red disapears and I can no longer weight paint.

Thanks

Don’t “Apply” the Armature Modifier! Just type in the name of the Armature Object (the OB: name in F9, Links and Materials tab). Then goto Pose mode with the Armature (Ctrl-Tab), Select the Mesh and goto WeightPaint mode (Ctrl-Tab again). Now select a Bone and weightpaint the verts that you want that bone to deform (they should be red if you already have Vertex Groups and, if not, a VG will be created when you paint.

Perfect that did the trick.
