Howdy, all! Thanks in advance for taking the time to read and respond.
I’ve been trying to model the original Star Trek Enterprise for a while now. I’ve finally overcome some of the modelling issues with the primary hull and most of the secondary hull. I was doing great right up until I got to the shuttle bay at the back of the secondary hull, where I started running into this weird pinching/creasing around the opening. I struggled with it for a couple of hours last night with no success. I’m hoping that someone on this site can give me some pointers as to how to fix it. I do have subsurf and edge split modifiers active. I know it’s probably just a matter of manipulating the vertices, but I’m at a loss as to where to go from here, as my modelling skills are pretty limited at this juncture. I’ve included a screenshot of the pinching in the hopes that someone on here can give me some guidance.
You need a supporting edge loop around areas like that, select all the vertices around the opening and hit E to extrude, then scale them inwards a little.
Thanks for the tips, guys. It’s still not perfect, but it’s an improvement. I’ll have to watch some more hard surface modelling tutorials and just keep messing with it to get it perfect. I do appreciate your responses, though, and I’m open to any more suggestions.
I appreciate the offer, DCBloodHound, but after careful examination of some more reference photos of the original model, it seems I was modelling the rear end completely wrong, meaning I have to go back and change everything anyhow. Sigh. Live and learn, I suppose.
