Welcome to Vault 02

Earth Year 2224

Humanity has long gone underground retreating from the inhabitable climate surface conditions.
Vault02 is one of the few private charter subsurface bunker settlements left.
Life has become few and far between on the sandstorm and heat eroded surface. From time to time
there are still refugees arriving in ships seeking shelter from the harsh environment
not knowing what this place will hold for them.

One thing I was wondering about and maybe somebody of you can help me here:
How would I animate such a heavy scene. Obviously, it’s not really gonna work to render a 30 sec animation, when each frame takes 2-3 hrs to render (or is it?).

By decreasing the resolution to HD and some more simplifying I may be able to push the render time per frame down to approx. 1 hr, which still is crazy much for a 30 sec animation at 30 fps.

I really couldn’t find any good help in the internet until now.

My plan is to make the spaceship ascend towards the surface from the vault, animate some camera movement so it’s not static and make the landing light system blink from bottom to top. Maybe animate some dust/sand particles blowing across the screen.

Is there any feasible way to do such stuff without having to spent 1 hr per frame in render times or is it just the way it is?

Hey, looking cool! How did you colorize the different mesh parts in object mode (without affecting the materials)? I’ve seen this frequently, but never cared until now, as I see it makes sense concerning organizing big things! Anyway, NASA couldn’t do a much more believable job :joy: I would add more rocks/rubble, but that’s just me. I’d also leave at least the thickness of one character white space around the “VAULT 02” logo, since that gives it away imo.

Have you tried E-Cycles? I run a 10+ year old rig and know the pain. E-Cycles gets me where I need to be 2x as fast, plus some nice “fast modes”. Never fiddled around with settings except sample count before, but here I can render with 64 samples and then denoise. Not advertising, just mentioning the biggest painkiller  There’s a 1$ version also, if you have an RTX card (which I don’t), there’s a 300 $ version. The denoiser is very good.

Thanks for the feedback! Appreciate it!
The random coloring of objects can be toggled in the viewport shading option in the upper right corner of the viewport window (at least that’s where it is for me).

Haven’t tried any of the Cycles versions out there yet, but will definitely hold an eye open and read into it, also because I got a RTX card. Thanks for the tip!

Ah yes, material “random”, perfect. You’re welcome
