When I show my works to my father, he always uses the term ‘draw’ instead of ‘make’. I think that the term ‘drawing’ should be used for works that are actually drawn by hand, and for 3D models and artworks, isn’t it more appropriate to use the word ‘make’? I told him that it’s better to use the term ‘made’ for my 3D works, but he continues to use the word ‘draw’. (Ex: Well drawn.) He’s an old man. What’s the correct term to use? Or just no rights / wrong? Anyone have similar experiences?

Huh, I dont think we have a term that feels natural enough. Maybe “well done”.
Still, thats a relatively minor issue, I dont think anyone will care about your linguistic choices.

I have a friend who made the same mistake, it’s because the 3D process isn’t super clear in their heads compared to a 2D workflow.
I think among specialist we’ll either stay very generic with “well made”, “well done”…
Or be more specific : well modeled, well animated, great job on textures…
But I think it’s important to differentiate who you’re talking to. Since they are no specialist it’s not important if they use the appropriate term or not, it’s more about what they want to say. Especially with family and friends you don’t want to be lost in meaningless details : you’re sharing a moment together, that’s precious !
Just like when talking 3D with people that don’t do CG I try to avoid technical lingo and express stuff using the most common terms. In return it’s ok if they do mistakes… it’s not their jobs…

If you have drawn the audience into the image… then it doesn’t have to be painted.
Also (when not using AI) the one you show your work… properly will not think that you didn’t made it but used somehow somw artwork from someone else…
Just imagine if you show some of your work to someone and the only question is: “Did you made this ??”
The apparent confusion in terminology is understandable, as one thing that came with the proliferation of computing is the reuse of a lot of terms to mean something they did not mean before.
A mouse for instance, is no longer just that furry critter scurrying around.
A tweet is also not just something a bird makes anymore
A bug is not always an insect
A post may not be a column of wood thrust into the ground
A roadmap might not at all be related to using an atlas while driving
The point to be made is that semantics such as this is not something that your relationship with him should be allowed to hinge on and cause division. Otherwise, it is time to step away from the computer and consider what kind of person you want to become.
Yea I’ve heard the same from people outside the field (the equivalent word in french). They don’t understand the technique, I don’t think it really matters. If communicating better what you do to your father matters to you, perhaps you could try delving a little more into the technical aspect of it. He might enjoy the explanation
My grandma used to say “shine the light” instead of “turn on the light” (again, the equivalent in french), I always suspected it was a remnant of using oil lamps.

Sounds like a wise old geezer and I’ve probably got a decade or two on him, as well but what I don’t get is why you bothered to even open this thread? well seems as if you’ve just gaslit him publicly…which personally is quite a shitty thing to do IMHO

Anyhow, perhaps he knows more than you think because as someone who had started their artistic journey in 1975 (my first unpaid piece of traditional artwork was published whilst still in high school) + 20yrs mucking around with CG, because there’s indeed a ring of truth in what he said.
