What are these Side Panels called in the interface?

In learning Blender, I take a lot of notes, but I keep referring to things as the “right side panel” or “far right side panel.” Can someone let me know the proper names of these two windows?

In this image I found online you can see the panels I refer to. One is clearly marked as “D” (has object, render, world properties etc) and the other is just to the LEFT of the letter “C” and it says “Transform” at the top (skinny tall menu with coordinates and rotation etc). I know that the actual “C” box is the outliner, but I’m referring to the menu just to the left of that.

I’ve seen both panels referred to as “Properties Panel.” They both are properties, in a way, but can someone tell me the actual official names so I can differentiate these two windows?

A = Tool Box
B = Timeline
C = Outliner
D = Properties Window

The menu on the right in the 3D vewer is another properties window that shows info for just the currently selected object.

Hope this helps!

That makes sense, but what about the box between A and C?
Is that called the “Transform Panel”?

That might be a good name for it but I want to use the right term when asking questions and note taking :slight_smile:

Hi,

D is the properties ‘editor’ and the area left of C is commonly referred to as the properties ‘panel’ even though this is technically incorrect. I believe the correct term is the properties ‘shelf’ to correspond to the tool shelf on the left side of the 3D view editor. Panel is misleading because it is actually a collection of panels. It gets more confusing because many other editors have their own properties shelf as well that opens on the same side with the same hotkey. So if in doubt specify the editor before describing properties ‘panel’, ‘shelf’ or even ‘region’.

You’re not alone in the confusion though, because some of the terms established in the manual just aren’t picked up by the community, or incorrect information is spread by popular tutorials. Then to make it clear what we mean we have to resort to the incorrect terms. But what can we do?

Here between us, that panel is usually called just N panel (N panel in 3D view in this case).
