What causes this?

I am still learning to model with Blender and at best I am a novice. From time to time I get a darker looking faces with most of the faces looking lighter. I thought it was the normals flipped but the faces still look different. Attached is an example. Why does this happen? Thanks so much.

it’s normal nothing is wrong with your model

Just add edge loops/add a subdivision modifier at 2 levels

I thought it was the normals flipped but the faces still look different
Double check by enabling normals display. Supply a link to your blend file for review

Attached is a screen shot of the normals display. I see that the faces in question have shorter normal indicators. Not sure what that means or how to resolve. Thanks.

all those darker faces are upside-down, select them hit W and select flip normals.

good luck.

‘A > CTRL + N’

That’s usually better way of doing it unles you have a really rare and unusual model.

I have already flipped the normals as per my original post. Same result.

flip them again and see if the faces are out, they may not be flipping for some reason. do you have multiple materials for this object?

Have done this multiple times attached is a screen shot of faces with normals display on.

what display method are you using, is this solid or textured, turn it to solid if it is not already and see if it is still dark.

It is solid.

Please: Always supply a .blend file for review with any support question, as Richard asked you to already yesterday. Unless you want to turn this into a guessing game?

Blend file attached.

Remove doubles, set autosmooth angle and nothing wrong.

Thanks that did it. You taught me two things.
