What computer do you use to Blend?

That’s high-end compared to mine.

I was kinda supprised to read that @ndy’s “Lox” was done on an smallish comp. “Athlon 1.333 - 256 MB RAM”

Pff… do you really need anything faster than 2 ghz? Just because it’s old doesn’t mean it’s crap and incapable of doing any basic tasks. Even 500mhz computers are still good for word processing, surfing, and servers.

It would be nice to have a faster one, but it’s not the dinosaur some of you guys are insinuating.

No, of course not. For myself, I couldn’t warent an expensive upgrade until I’ve at least gotten my money’s worth out of the old stuff. And I’m still doing that.

Speaking of how much can be done with a small computer,
Ever hear of the Contiki web browser? It’s allows 8 bit computers like the old C-64 to serf the web without requiring an external server to process the data for it first.
http://www.sics.se/~adam/contiki/apps/webbrowser.html

And these pages are supposed to be comming from C-64 web server. http://tfe.c64.org/ (may have to lower security measures and try a few times, as it’s supposed to drop any requests it can’t handle)

Does anyone know what the performance ratio of a high-end machine is to a low end machine by current standards? I use a 700MHz ppc processor with 384MB Ram but how much faster would a 3GHz pentium 4 be with similar Ram? I know it’s not linear but would a factor of 5 be roughly accurate?

I would just like to know about machines you can buy new. Like, say how would the lowest emac 1.25GHz G4 at £550 compare with the top end dual 2.5GHz G5 with liquid cooling at £2200?

Does Blender support dual processors, BTW?

I think older machines are ok for Blending if you use them right. For raytraced scenes and other high quality stuff, I just run it overnight. Even if it takes 5 nights instead of one, the job gets done and I can do other projects during the day.

one computer does photoshoping, while connected via a network to the other computer which recieves the images and will update them onto my blender mesh for rendering.

UV mapping virtually interactivly. now that will be cool.
