What do I need to view most .avi files

Now I have quicktime and all of that but there’s been way too many times I see a Blender video that looks interesting and yet it says quicktime is missing the software. I can view other formats like .mov files but avi’s i’m just not able to view, meaning most of the feature tests here and on Blender.org I can’t view.

Is there any free way to solve this problem.

You might not have the proper codec(s) for viewing the files.

Have you tried the VLC media player? ( http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ ) Hopefully it’ll work for you.

edit I saw the fluid simulation thread where you were having problems viewing the video, and since the video is DivX, VLC should be able to play it.

VLC looks good but exactly where is the download link I should use if i’m using windowsXP and live in the US?

I’m in the US and I downloaded from the “Optralan [http]” server, here: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html

Now how do I get it so those videos uses VLC instead of quicktime, I downloaded it and played the video but I get the quicktime logo and then nothing.

Okay, I found a way to play the video in the player, but the problem is, it starts, but then it stops after a second and won’t play unless I slow it down, how do I force the whole thing to load before it plays?

I use Firefox, so I installed the plugins for Firefox, and now it opens those types of videos with VLC, and pre-loads them. If you’re using a different web browser, I guess you could always save the video to your computer and then open it with VLC…(There could be a better solution.)

Thanks it works:)

Downloading the file does work, but it’s still a bulky way to view it.

Tommorow i’ll check if our computer upstairs is able to view .avi files from Blender.org, because if so my father can transfer the codec used for being able to play it to my computer and I can play it directly in my browser and all since our computers are interconnected(That’s how he was able to get Paint shop pro 7 from his work computer to mine.)

ok yeah, i use osx too and i have VLC and everything, exept i cant find a plug-in for safari or firefox, or any mozilla based web-browsers :frowning: :frowning:

so does anyone know of any plugins i can use, or if there is any way i can open an .avi file or any other kind of media file on the internet through VLC?

.thanks :frowning:

Alfred Indamine: I’m not sure how VLC installs on OSX, but on Windows XP when I launch the installer and go through it, it gives me a list of things that I can check to install, and there’s a Firefox plugin that you can install. (Once again, that’s on Windows XP so I’m not sure if it’s the same on OSX or not.) Hopefully that helps.

When I installed it it had a box labled activeX plugin which is the plugin system Internet Explorer uses which I use. But I don’t know how to make it the default player for certain types of files.

I’ve never managed to get the VLC plugin for Firefox to work (even when it’s the default player for .avi/.mpeg/.rm files). As for the ActiveX plugin for IE, go to Internet Options>>Programs>>Manage Add-ons (should be there, as are all plugins of the type), then enable the VLC plugin, and you’ll probably have to disable the Windows Media Plugins (the ones that use wmp.dll, they’re enabled by default).

I’ve never tried MPlayer for OS X, but on Linux using MPlayer and MPlayer_plugin for Firefox (with the Win32 codec package), I can play everything except DRM fortified Windows Media Files. I didn’t want to see those anyway.

Use Windows Media Player, and download DivX. DivX will update Media Player with it’s codec, and from then on you just use Media Player.
