What do you think of 300?

 I am actually pondering if it is worth going out of my lair to watch this movie.
All my friends tell me this is a good film etc…

What’s all the fuss about in the first place?

try to look around for the original 300 manga/graphic novel. I have a .cbr file that I’ve downloaded a reader program for it and it was a pretty good story of facing the overwhelming odd to at least try to atone some past arrogant mistake.

P.S. I haven’t seen the movie so I dunno how different it may be and I cannot watch it until a captioned theater version come out or when the DVD comes out.

:EDIT: found some wiki info on the comic version, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/300_(comic_book)

I actually thought it was a silly movie, lol. Best parts were the action scenes, how they did them, but the rest was hard to watch. Lead actor has a strong Irish-y accent and a slight speech impediment which was weird. As far as the CG, they couldn’t even get a real sky - much less a location shoot. Movie looks like the whole thing was filmed in a warehouse in Van Nuys. It made the action cool though. Some good male-oriented violence was the best I could get out of this.

I heard it was to stick more closely to the graphic novel.
Although this leaves me a bit sceptical…

Say it’s not a lisp :p…
“I am Leonidaf, king of the fpartanfs”

 that would kill the movie for me. However it’s an annoyance that won’t bugger Radscientist too much  (if you need captions, this must mean a lisp or a bad accent won’t annoy you) and I get to see it dubbed in french  (if I decide to move that lazy ass)

Personally, I thought the movie was excellent. I think some of the acting was slightly stylized, mainly towards the beginning of the movie, but for the most part the acting seemed like it would fit in any drama. The action scenes were cool, and the overall visual style of the movie was very nice. Plus I really liked the characters, and I thought the movie had an actual message/theme to it, unlike most generic action films. I highly recommend it.

I heard some people in iraq sued the people who made the movie because it somehow resembles the war in iraq?!weird.

I agree entirely. Visually stunning but the acting gets a bit lame.

Irish?? How dare you. The lead actor is Scottish and there’s nothing wrong with a Scottish accent.

Again I agree. All I could think was, here comes another shot with sunlight shining through a tree or some kind of animated sky.

Overall, I’d say it was worth seeing but don’t go in expecting it to be as good as Sin City.

one of the best movies since 2007 started. Go see it.

taking into the fact that this is only still march… But hey! I want to watch it cuz there is slaughtering of people in a cool way… And about the war in Iraq, they have nothing on the awesomeness of 300.

Lol yeah I do need captions and the lisp would not kill the movie for me at all. Even if I’m using my hearing aid, I can only use the sounds to help “line up” the movie with the subtitle and captions and to make the movie a little more encompassing.

Though since I’m deaf, I’m a little more of a detail-based visual person and this makes most bad acting looks horrible. So after hearing that the acting is a little off, I probably wouldn’t go out of my way to watch it except for things like a movie night (with the DVD of course) and whatnot.

Yep. It’s all CG/bluescreen. Was made to look like the graphic novel.

There’s a pretty good article about making the movie from the art director’s perspective at CGSociety. He’s answering questions in the forum too.

I think I’ll wait for the DVD. Hopefully there’ll be some good howitwasdone extras on it.

I loved the movie, very good. It followed the comic book pretty closely.

As far as the CG, they couldn’t even get a real sky - much less a location shoot.

It was shot all on green-screened sets. This was to make it more like the comic.

I heard some people in iraq sued the people who made the movie because it somehow resembles the war in iraq?!

Well a good portion of the middle east (including Iran, and some Iraq) was the old Persian empire.

this makes most bad acting looks horrible

I really liked the acting, thought it fit the comic bit style

The acting isn’t great, and manages to overemphasize the epic nature of the battle – all the “For Sparta!” gets old. It’s based on a graphic novel, so a lot of the visuals are pretty stylized. The movie also has a weird sharpened, slightly overexposed look, similar to the shots in Gladiator or Lord of the Rings.

If you want to see a movie about fighting and people getting killed, though, it’s a good movie.

a lot of the fighting shots are really nice (maybe a tad on the bloody side- not that I mind)

oh, that’s nice as in, “wow, he just chopped that guy’s leg off, flipped him in the air, and stabbed him!” not nice as in “yaay! flowers! butterflies! whee!”

A bit more on the serious side, It may have been a bit over the top, the acting may not have been great, etc. but I still really enjoyed it a lot.
