What does Python do for me?

Please help me fellow artists, I have only been blending for about 2 months… And I have been hearing a TON about plugins and python stuff. What is it and do i want it? And if I do need/want it, where can I get it? Please help. Thanks a ton.

Python is a programming language and an execution environment for this language. It is used within Blender to enable extensions and enhancements of Blender without the need of changing the whole program. It enables users to write scripts that work on the inners of the Blender core and thus enables functional enhancements.

Quite a lot of scripts are delivered with Blender. E.g. in the object mode with an selected object you find them in the Object->Scripts menu (there are scripts for other modes too).

You can easily mod Blender without knowing C++.

You can use scripts to generate stuff, and do things Blender cannot easily deliver, and also to go beyond the logic bricks in the BGE. You can also use it to create an importer/exporter and stuff.

reading over this board will give you an idea of what you can do with it. all the blender scripts are written in python. you can get it here, http://www.python.org/download/ by the way blender uses the python 2.5 version if you use python 2.6 or 3.0 blender wont find it. you can instal the other version in addition to 2.5 if you want but you must have 2.5 for blender. you do need python to load and run most pyton scripts.

I went to python.org but am unable to figure out how to get 2.5? Please help me! And BTW what can python do that will help with sculpting, I have some radical meshes that could use some tweeks. thanks again!

http://www.python.org/download/releases/2.5.4/ go there and download the one for your system. if you are on windows dont download the 64 bit versions unless you are 100% sure you have a 64 bit operating system. most computer manufactures put 32 bit windows even on 64 bit cpu computers so your computer acts like a 32 bit system. win 32 is probably cheaper for them and it actually is more stable than win 64 so it reduces what they spend on customer suport. if you are on mac get the mac version. if you were on linux you already know how to get this far.

as far as sculpting you are going to need somebody smarter than me. try running a search for sculpting on the python board. sorry but i probably know even less than you do about that. http://blenderartists.org/forum/search.php?searchid=3325748 is a board search for sculpt python.

rdo3, I cant thank you enough for all your help man! It’s greatly appreciated!!! Happy blending bro.
