What happened to the add tool function in the tool panel?

I’m following Ira Krakow’s tutorial on Python with Blender 2.5 and at one point he is showing how you can call operators from various places within Blender. One place he shows it is from an Add Tool dialog in the Tools panel of the 3D window. It’s there in older versions of 2.5. Where did it go in 2.5.4?

And while I’m asking, he also shows a search window in the top window between the Blender Render drop down, and where it says Ve:8… What happened to this?

The Add Tool was removed in 2.54. It didn’t save added tools between sessions so as it was not yet properly implemented as originally planned it was removed.
