In general I agree
Howeverl it is not that simple of an answer really regards going in and out of apps.
When you are producing content you choose the apps that help you work faster. Even with the few interop glitches you have to slay. Once those are sorted the process is smooth.
And between the usual apps that people use say Zbrush or Substance and then to Blender or Maya, the time spent in that is nothing at all compared to the time you save working in an app geared towards and optimized for that task.
The end result is always more important anyway.
But regardless there is not enough time saved doing it all in 3D Max even if he did do that, to justify or explain his amazing output.
I can tell you as a person who manages a team of 20 that it is not the tool that makes one artist faster than another.
I have seen some artists work at a blazing speed in an app they are familiar with and others work slow
This guy did not do an insane amount is work because of the tool. It did an insane amount of work because he is inhuman.
Don’t use another artist’s work as an example of what a tool can do. Yes. One tool can have faster and ever better workflows than another. But take two artists in the same tool, and the relative speed depends on the artist using the tool.
There are a very few of us that have a special talent to crank out work. Apparently this guy is one of them.
So to the subject at hand.
Does Blender need more tools in one place? Yes, if your goal is to keep everything open source. Then absolutely.
But if you can pay money for external tools it really does not matter.
There is a project to bring more if this to Blender
What level of tools will Blender get?
Not sure. Which leads to my next comment about sacrafice of quality.
That is largely dependent on the target of the effort. For this guy, the target is a game cinematic. For an indie game that is fine.
But let’s say you want to really say “without sacraficing quality” in the AAA level of game trailers then you have to up your game a bit.
These guys have been the standard for a while.
http://www.blur.com/
They don’t do it all in one tool at all.
So I think you have to look at Blur and say, if Blender had all the tools in one place to do this then some very talented artists could leverage those tools to create the same quality.
But Blender would have to be as good or better than Zbrush, Mari, Substance Painter, Nuke, Fusion…etc.
And it would not be that much faster than using multiple tools. Would be real cool though.
But is it something realistic to expet?
