What is Blender 2.9?

Sorry if this seems like a dumb question…but I am a long time Blender user (back to 2.49) and just really getting completely comfortable with 2.8 and now all I ever see are posts about 2.9!

Is 2.9 another huge shift, or is it just good new stuff in the 2.8 package?

Thanks anyone for taking time to respond…

No, not huge shift in the software, just a new way of versioning, see here

I see - they changed the cadence for release numbering.

Got it.

Thanks for responding

If blender releases were similar to earthquakes, 2.5 and 2.8 would be on a scale of 8 or 9, while 2.90 is more on a 5, (it is more of a ground work for what to come later, namely Everything nodes, Vulkan support, Asset manager, VSE 2.0, etc…) those will shake things again (quite a lot).

That is a good summary. The way the news is being posted about 2.9 it felt like another 2.5 or 2.8 but because of they way they changed the way they number releases it is just an iteration of 2.8

forget about big jumps, blender has quite big developer power and the development will be constant from here on

Here is the list of changes in 2.90 :

my favourite feature is the new sky texture. It is really useful for making full 3D movie no need external sky texture
