What is the best way to animate a digital elevator display?

Hey!

Sorry if this is a stupid question. A friend asked me to build a short animation for him where an elevator crushes. The digital display is supposed to count down while it falls.

I am not quite sure how to do this, I could actually model each “line” and keyframe the emission shader to switch it on and off.

Or is there a way that you can animate letters per keyframe (animate in a sense that at keyframe 1 the text says “05” and at keframe 10 it changes to “04”)? I tried in blender but couldn’t do it at first approach. If it’s possible then I could get a font that looks like a digital display and do it that way.

I would be thankful for any tip or a link that I might not have found myself.

hey batFINGER, thank you for your fast reply!
This will save me a lot of time! I’ll read into the basics of scripting this weekend so I’ll know what I’m actually doing :spin:.
Thanks, you rock!

i just tried batFINGER’s script. I have to say it is awesome!
I just followed the instructions above and it is as easy as you can imagine. I can only recommend that script.

So thank you again batFINGER!
