What is the deal with Animation nodes and Geometry nodes?

I haven’t used Animation nodes, but I can already see that it’s a far superior plugin compared to the current state of Geometry nodes, so I’m wondering why Geometry nodes exist in the first place. Is their idea to evenutally remove the need for Animation nodes plugin (and other stuff, as per Everything nodes project)? Anyway, I’m still confused, should a newcomer learn both, or just focus on Geometry nodes, or what?

Also, why are Animation nodes called “Animation”? Its functionality goes beyond animating things, right?

From what I understood the person who created Animation Nodes is the one currently working on Geometry Nodes, so I guess Geometry Nodes will replace AN, they will do the same, and even more

That’s nice to hear!
So I guess I will stick to Houdini in the meantime.
