What is the fastest/easiest way to do this?

I am trying to “deepen” 2 parts on the same face on a heightened cube. Basically, what is the easiest or the fastest way to convert this regular quadrilateral prism into this:

As you can see, the places where the 2 buttons are are “deepened” into the cube. I don’t want the buttons included. No textures. Just the box shape. How could I do this myself? (Remember I am a huge noob at Blender)

Press I to inset, press G to move. Done.

you can also press I to inset, then while the inset function is running, hold control to switch to inset depth.

Keeping in mind that I can’t even move properly in the program, I have a couple of questions:

  • Do I need more meshes to do this? I currently only have 1
  • Pressing I gives me a weird line that doesn’t do anything when clicked, pressing G moves around the cube
  • Could you give me a more… key-detailed tutorial

Ah ok let me backtrack a bit.

Start with your default cube. Make it taller, if you haven’t already, with S (Scale) > Z. Press Tab to switch to Edit Mode.

Press Ctrl and R. Press 2. This will make loop cuts- left click or Enter to confirm where you want them. I would recommend just pressing Enter.

Select the top and bottom front faces with your selection method- left or right click, idk. That face will now be a different color than the rest (for me, it’s blue.)

Press I, then G, or I and also Ctrl.

If you’re this early on in your journey, may I suggest:
