What is this yellow blob?

Hi folks.

Now and then my usual editing cursor arrows and size tools vanish to be replaced with a yellow blob on a stick. Could someone please let me know firstly what this is, and secondly how to banish it?

Depends on the tool, that blob on a stick is an indicator of the tool so how you action it, such as in extrude where you can use it to drag the face out. So the ‘gizmo’ changes based on the tool.
