Know that Blender can use ttf fonts i thought about making a dingbats font for Blender users.
So what would you like to see in such a font?
I thought about arrows, stars, several spirals, the blender logo…
If you want to make sketches, you are welcome!
This will be my first font, but i think it’s not too hard for a symbol font.
I reactivated Corel 7 for that, which can export Truetype, very useful…
It probably won’t work as a font, it doesn’t have a not-defined glyph or naming or anything like that, but you should be able to open it up and copy out the glyph.
Is it your work? I don’t want to use copyrighted stuff, or symbols from other (commercial) fonts. So i will make the shapes myself or give credit to people who helped.
You would do better if you made the font directly in Type1. TTF fonts are describle with quadratics and Type1 with cubics. Blender uses TTF fonts by translating them to Type1 as far as I can judge. Starting a degree lower, the translation is usually a mess, with way too many control points (up to 10 times I counted in some instances) and direction errors that cause points to jut out when one tries to extrude a translated TTF.
If you experience those problems (change you font from ‘font’ to ‘curve’ in Blender and see if it has the same control point disposition as you designed) and if you come up with some good design I wouldn’t mind tracing the as Type1 directly for you.
Or use PfaEdit in Linux yourself.
i know about quality issues when using ttf (i mainly do prepress stuff, so i use type1 of course). I only thought, it would be a good way to get curves from a vector software to blender, and to make a set of basic shapes for beveling profiles and stuff.
My SE version of Corel only has the ttf export filter…
And i am on windows, and i don’t know any free font editor on it
Thank you for the offer. I think, i will start to make the shapes, show them to you and you decide if they are worth the work. Allright?
BTW, what format would you prefer? I think freehand EPS would be just fine, and you wouldn’t have to trace them, just converting. And i wouldn’t have to use hated corel…
D.
PS. May i contact you personally, when i have the shapes ready (~1 week, i think)

Don’t worry, I have no real intent to be a judge. I really meant : "if you find it worth designing them then I’ll trace them.

I’d rather trace them. I’m quite fast on the Bezier thing and I’d rather have the control.
Medium gray on white and gif would be best since I had some problems with .png for some reason.

No problem with personnal messages or email. You’ll find all you need in my profile.
You may send the shapes as soon as they come up. My mailbox has a capacity of 5 Mb top.
You could tell me to what letter you’d like to see it mapped : I’m pretty sure that Blender has an output for lowercase and uppercase on any given national keyboard but wouldn’t bet on what come out for other symbols.
