What methods do you use for creating base mesh?

Just wondering what methods you could use for creating base mesh. I’ve tried using a cube and extruding it, using a plane and filling in faces, and using a plane and filling in faces while the sub surf modifier is working. Are there any other ways? Which one would be the most effective for creating organic models?

Subdivide a cube several times, then dyntopo sculpt, then retopo, and maybe multires sculpt on top of that.
