How can we tell?

The line in CPU-Z that says mPGA-478

Okay, big update on the situation:

I’m just going to save for a while, probably ending up with more like a, $600 budget. I like. Because I realized, finally, that if I buy a motherboard now, it will have an out of date socket that I can’t upgrade, and no PCIx slot. I mean I know “future-proofing” is really impossible, but that would be a 1st-rate, premiumly stupid purchase. A waste of $200. So, I’ll probably just start entirely over. I know nothing about AMDs, they seem to be more $$$, for a frequency. So, if someone could tell me more about AMDs, what would be decent for them, that would be great.

P.S. Thanks for explaining the cpu-z analysis, I see now.[/list]

oh god please dont look under memory timings :stuck_out_tongue:

Frequency is not a measure of the processing power of the chip. AMD chips do more work per clock cycle than Intel, so a lower clock speed AMD will run as fast if not faster than an Intel.

Read reviews that give performance comparisons over a range of tasks. Due to the difference in the architecture of the chips Intels perform better at some tasks than AMDs and vice versa. Choose a CPU that has the better performance in the areas you want for the same money (this will be an AMD in most cases).

AMD vs Intel in a simplified nutshell.

As always, research, research, research. The technology changes fast, so be careful.
