In the 70’s and 80’s there was a lot of lite rock and easy-listening that sounded like that. There was singing, tho. I dunno if you’re dead-set against lyrics, but the Carpenters sprint to mind. The first one seems more like it would be just general Film score music. You’d probably like Aaron Zigman (he does film scores that sound a lot like this): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtSuNsCH6h4

A lot of 70’s / 80’s film and TV shows had the sort of score that you have on that second vid as well (which doesn’t surprise me that it’s on a 70’s (early 80’s??) anime show.
EXAMPLE:

My guess is that yur best bet is to look for 70’s and maybe early 80’s soft rock / soft pop and maybe some of the jazzier folk stuff that was in the US market. I dunno what sort of stuff they were cranking out elsewhere, but guessing by the number of european hits I am getting on some of these bands, I’d wager that there was a fairly decent amount of support over there as well.

If you are dead-set on instrumentals, tho, I think 70’s film soundtracks will probably have more of the sort of stuff your looking for.

Almost forgot: a lot of 70’s and 80’s prog bands sounded like this as well, and prog tends to have more instrumentals / longer periods without vocals. But that would be less classical and more rock leaning. So you might want to check some of that as well.
