Was just sitting here wondering over a cup of coffee what would have happend if Ton hadn’t succeeded in freeing the source? I feel we are so far past this mark that we can freely discuss it now…hehe
Personally, i would have just kept on using 2.23 and try to make the best out of it for as long as i could. Eventually one would have had to move on to another 3D program as the industry grows and changes and new things are developed.
There could have been development, but most likley in the form of scripts and plugins for extra features. This would have helped sustain us for a little longer…
And i think there would always remain a loyal hobbiest group, that dont mind if they have all the latest technology, and would stick with Blender just for fun. And there will always be the newbies, someone else discovering Blender and having good fun with it.
So, i want to hear all of your thoughts on what you think would have happend if Blender had died. Especially great to hear would be how it would have affected you personally.
When I first heard that Nan was goign bankrupt…I was like: OMG no more blender??? I just start and I’ll have to stop?? no!! but then I remember that I would still have the blender.exe on my comp so I could continu blending at max. I have to say that at this time, I didn’t really care if the source were free or not. I didn’t know much about 3d, the only thing I knew was that blender were free, “easy” to use and that I had fun using it. But now that I see the free source, I’m pretty happy because development continu and it seem it will get better and better (well I hope so :p)
Just look at tuhopuu, it’s an awesome unoficial blender, I love it even if I didn’t use it that much.
I was devestated when I saw the news, but I quickly found where everyone was hanging out and decided the hell with it, I’m a blender user, I’m not going to use something else. I would have continued to use it even if it had never gone opensource.
Hmm… lots of things could have happened. But it did happen.
Well, let’s see anyway… I wouldn’t have become such an awful figure in this community, cheese would go scarce, and Square might have made another short or two. Lots of stuff, but it DID happen, so it’s quite pointless to think about it.
i think that blender would have lived on for maybe a year or so. i would have saved my money and probably purchased truespace, or used xsi personal or what ever they call it.
i don’t know, i’m just glad we were able to buy blender back.
I would have (and did, for a few weeks) change over to anim8or. Eventually I would have saved up for 3D Studio Max or maybe even Maya.
I’m not a loyalist, so if something happened to Blender I would move on without looking back. I keep using Blender, though, because it’s the best freeware modeller I’ve found.
I had just started to use Blender, when I saw the news.
If Ton hadn’t succeeded, it probably would have affected my future
profession. I want to make games and it’s good I practise modelling now.
Oh, then I’d probably be less annoying because the open-source project the community had as a back-up plan had me as self-appointed icon maker. (Don’t ask.)
And I’d probably stick with Blender. There’s just nothing good out there. It’s like going to a Hollywood studio and looking at their summer movies. There’s only going to be a few good ones.
I probably would have gone to another app. but I’d have kept tabs on what was happening here if a serious developement effort for a new modeller took hold.
I probably would’ve kept using Blender as a did when NaN died. It’s not like blender.exe disappeared from my computer. And besides, at that time, Blender was, and still is, the most powerful free 3D application available. So i really don’t have to ask myself what would’ve happened, because i gave deep thought of it and decided to stay with Blender after all.
